What is an Instagram broadcast channel?

Broadcast channels on Instagram allow creators to send followers Direct Messages (DMs).

Creators can use broadcast channels to share behind-the-scenes sneak peeks and the latest updates using photos, text, voice notes, and videos.

They can also create polls in their broadcast channels to crowdsource follower feedback.

Only creators can send messages on broadcast channels, but followers can react to the shared content and vote in polls.

Instagram will add more channel features, including the option to add another creator to the broadcast channel and question prompts to collect questions for Ask Me Anything (AMA) sessions.

Instagram users with a Creator account can access and create a one-to-many messaging space (broadcast channel).

Benefits of creating an Instagram broadcast channel

Instagram broadcast channels have awesome perks, including the following.

1. Build connections with followers via direct interactions

Broadcast channels help your clients get closer to their followers since they interact with them directly.

The channel’s DM setup can make follower interactions feel more intimate, which is great for connecting deeper with fans and boosting engagement.

For example, your clients could update followers about new merchandise through the broadcast channel before announcing it on their main feeds.

It can make your clients’ broadcast channel followers feel more special, fostering deeper connections with their biggest fans.

2. Get follower feedback

Besides Instagram Stories, broadcast channels can be an excellent space to gather feedback from followers via engaging polls.

You can:

  • Ask channel followers about their thoughts on your client’s new merchandise design ideas.
  • Ask followers to react to a piece of content, topic, idea, etc., with an emoji, like the thumbs-up emoji (👍) for Yay and the thumbs-down emoji (👎) for Nay.
  • Ask channel followers to vote in a poll about the new feature they want to see in your client’s latest product.

3. Boost your advocacy marketing efforts

Creating a community within your clients’ broadcast channels helps them attract followers who can become brand advocates.

It’s a great space to nurture passionate followers who share positive feelings about your clients’ brands.

Take it from Social Media Smarter Founder and CEO Bonnie Sainsbury, who said…

Social media will help you build up the loyalty of your current customers to the point that they will willingly and for free tell others about you.

How to invite people to your Instagram Broadcast Channel

When your clients first send a message, all their followers will receive a notification inviting them to join the channel.

Your clients can also invite followers to their channels by doing the following:

  • Create and share a link to your clients’ channels. However, the broadcast channels are available for select locations and users. Also, you can’t turn off the broadcast channel invite link, but you can reset it to generate new links at any time.
  • Include a link to the channel in your clients’ Instagram Stories. Admins and creators can share the broadcast channel to Stories to boost its visibility.
  • Share a message within the broadcast channel to your clients’ Instagram Stories. Tap and hold a channel message and select the Share to Story option. The Story will include a snapshot of the message so your client’s Story viewers can tap it and join the broadcast channel.
