Share of voice (SOV)

Share of voice measures your brand visibility compared to competitors within a defined market or conversation set.

Share of Voice (SOV) measures your brand’s visibility compared to competitors in a defined market or conversation set. In social media, SOV is often calculated as your brand mentions divided by total category mentions, expressed as a percentage.

Basic formula:
SOV = (Your mentions / Total market mentions) x 100

SOV is useful for tracking competitive presence, campaign impact, and brand awareness momentum. It helps answer strategic questions like: Are we gaining visibility over time? Which competitor is dominating conversation share? Did our launch actually shift market attention?

SOV is most useful when paired with:

  • Sentiment (quality of conversation)
  • Engagement metrics
  • Channel breakdown
  • Topic-level analysis

For example, your total SOV may remain stable while your SOV for “AI social publishing” increases significantly. That topic-level gain can indicate strong positioning progress even if overall share does not move immediately.

Common mistakes include comparing unrelated competitor sets, counting irrelevant mentions, and ignoring sentiment. A rising SOV is only valuable if it reflects relevant and healthy brand visibility.
